Introducing your class to Writelike

School of the teacher Rafael Cordero by Francisco Oller

Writelike offers a lot of room for interpretation, so it's important to show your students how you want them to use it before you assign it as independent work.

Complete at least one lesson, as a group, in class

Show students how to analyse snippets and examples

  • Ask students to read snippets aloud, discuss what they notice, predict and reveal highlighting.
  • Discuss whether students agree with each other and whether they agree with us.
  • Repeat with examples.

Show students how to write and analyse a response

  • Demonstrate a response. Apply highlighting. Ask students for feedback.
  • Jointly construct an alternative response, calling on different students for each highlighter.
  • Ask students to write their own version then discuss as a group and make sure everyone agrees on standards.
  • If you're using a projector or screen share, you could show student responses in the response feed on the page, or on the dashboard in your group view.

Let students complete the lesson independently

  • Continue this process until students are comfortable and then let them complete the lesson independently, either in class or at home.

Show students how to use Wrotevote and/or Peer Review

  • Once the first lesson is completed, come back as a group to demonstrate how Checkpoint Peer Review and/or Wrotevote work.
  • You'll need to decide which of these tools you want to use and how you want to use them. If in doubt, use Wrotevote simply because it is more fun.
  • If you use both, compare each experience and explain which one you want students to use and when.

Transition to independent work

  • Repeat this process until your students are confident and engaged, and then you should be able to assign lessons and let students complete them independently.
