Quick start guide

Three men in a gondola by Edouard Riou

Okay, you're keen to get started as quickly as possible. Here's what we'd suggest:

Prep

  1. Create a class.
  2. Create student codes for your students.

Lesson one

  1. In class, complete How to Writelike (which will have been automatically assigned to the class when you created it). It should be doable in a single lesson.
  2. Note: Make sure students complete the copy of lesson that is assigned to the class, not any copy they might have assigned to themselves. (If they complete a personal version of the lesson, their checkpoint piece won't go into Wrotevote.)
  3. Play Wrotevote at the end of the lesson—students should all have a short, punchy opening submitted as their checkpoint piece. This should give students a sense of closure and some motivating feedback.

Lesson two

  1. Assign an easy lesson: we'd suggest Em Dashes or Semicolons from the Expressive Punctuation set, or something from the Remix series, but it really depends on your class. (They may prefer to do something story-oriented.) Don't do anything longer than ~15 pages.
  2. In class, begin the second lesson as a group, and then let students work independently.
  3. They may have to finish the lesson at home.

Ongoing

  1. In the next class, play Wrotevote together again.
  2. Once everyone is comfortable, assign whichever lessons you like and let the class start doing Writelike as regular homework.
  3. Spot check the class dashboard to monitor student performance.
  4. Use occasional classroom Wrotevote or Checkpoint Peer Review sessions to maintain motivation.

That's it! Easy!
