Writelike's approach to feedback

Writelike does not provide automated feedback on writing activities. (Maybe one day! 👀 )

Instead we imagine feedback in three layers.

Writelike lessons generally provide highly-scaffolded tasks.

We encourage students to generate their own internal feedback by comparing their work to the scaffolds, and self-correcting as necessary.

However, this does require a high level of self-efficacy and motivation which students may not initially have with regard to writing.

To build motivation, we provide peer feedback tools such as response feeds, Wrotevote, and Peer Review.

These tools encourage students to read each others' work and offer feedback ranging from purely subjective (Wrotevote) to slightly more rigorous (Peer Review).

When a student receives feedback that someone liked their writing, it's a powerful motivator.

Finally, teachers can provide direct feedback on checkpoint pieces (and can comment on other exercises in the response feed).

Since teachers will already have major summative assignments in class that consume much of their feedback time, Writelike leans on self-assessment and peer feedback.

However, teacher feedback is a powerful motivator and often more substantive than peer feedback, so there is value in deeper engagement, if you have the time.

With that context in mind, let's look at Writelike's review and feedback tools.
