Overview
This is our Privacy Policy for all users of Writelike, by using this service you understand and agree to these terms.
We do not collect any Personally Identifying Information (PII) for student accounts.
We only collect sufficient information for a teacher to be able to distinguish between students in their class and save their work.
What data do we collect?

For teacher accounts:
- First name
- Last name
- Email address
- School name (optional)
- User-generated content (snippet replies, teacher feedback replies) that you post to Writelike’s service.

For student accounts:
- First name
- Last initial/s (optional, 3 characters max)
- Writelike/Frankenstories login code
- User-generated content (snippet replies, peer feedback replies, emojis) that you post to Writelike’s service.

For school account holders:
- First name
- Last name
- Email address
- School name
Notes on teacher & student names
- Names are never verified, so users can use aliases if they prefer.
- Teachers can edit student names and aliases in the Class view.
- User-generated content such as lesson responses are linked to these names.
- This allows a teacher to enforce individual accountability for writing in their class.
Website analytics and cookies
Frankenstories uses website analytics such as Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity to help us better understand our users’ experience (e.g. how much time they spend on which pages, which links they choose to click, what users do and don’t like, etc) and this enables us to build and maintain our service with user feedback.
Google Analytics
- Google Analytics collects first-party cookies, data related to the device/browser, IP address and on-site activities to measure and report statistics about user interactions on the website. - You can opt out of Google Analytics tracking using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on: https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout/?hl=en-GB
- Google Analytics stores data within the jurisdiction of the United States of America.
Microsoft Clarity
- Clarity uses cookies and other technologies to collect data on user interface behaviour and devices. This includes a device's IP address (processed during your session and stored in a de-identified form), device screen size, device type (unique device identifiers), browser information, geographic location (country only), and the preferred language used to display our website. Clarity stores this information on our behalf in a pseudonymized user profile. Clarity is contractually forbidden to sell any of the data collected on our behalf.
Who can see what collected data?
- Writelike.org admin can see all collected data. Our team are trained in privacy and security protocols and we as a company take your privacy and security very seriously.
- Teachers can see all content written by all students in their classes.
- Students can see their own content.
- Students can see relevant peer content if their teacher activates feedback features such as page feed or Wrotevote.
How is collected data used?
- Writelike administrators routinely review user-generated content to inform product enhancements and help us enforce our content standards and terms of service.
- We sometimes publish or share anonymised content for instructional and promotional purposes in a variety of channels, including newsletter, social media, and the Writelike site.
- We sometimes shared anonymised content with academic researchers for research purposes.
- As a policy, we won’t share content that we feel may contain identifying personal information.
- We conduct an internal risk-assessment before publishing any content.
- No user data is sold or shared with third parties, except as specified by our website analytics policy (meaning that anonymised, encrypted analytics data is stored by third party analytics platforms such as Google and Clarity to help us improve our services).

All personal information collected is necessary for our legitimate interests:
- To allow an education provider to identify students and provide feedback and guidance to students.
- To protect the account and information of each individual user and the integrity of our website.
- To allow us to monitor and uphold the content standards of our products.
- To understand how customers use our products to further develop these products and improve our overall service.
Your rights
You have the following rights in relation to your personal information:
- The right to request to see what personal information is held about you.
- The right for any of your personal information to be modified or permanently deleted.
- The right to lodge a complaint directly to us or to your local supervisory privacy authority.
- The right to withdraw consent to collecting, keeping and processing personal information on your own behalf or a parent or guardian on behalf of your child.
How is data secured?
- Teacher access is secured via password and teachers are responsible for storing and protecting their passwords.
- Student access is secured via unique student code, for which students are responsible.
- Teachers can reset passwords, group codes, or student codes at any time.
- Writelike admin have a variety of policy, technical, and physical safeguards in place to maintain security of user data. These include encryption of data in transit and the ongoing security provided by Microsoft Azure.
Deleting content
- Teachers can delete lessons and classes. When a teacher deletes a lesson or class, everything except student accounts will be deleted from Writelike servers, including lessons, student responses and Frankenstories games. Student accounts will continue to exist, but will have no record of the class or any activity in it.
- Students can delete their own responses.
Parents and Guardians
- The personal information collected from children is kept to the absolute minimum (as outlined above in “What data do we collect?”). This information is used to secure your child’s account and our website as well as to facilitate monitoring and instruction from a child’s education provider.
- A parent or guardian of a child may contact us via the below listed details to request to view the information provided by their child, or for the account of their child and all personal information to be permanently deleted or no longer collected. As a matter of privacy, we will ask for verifiable proof of the relationship between the parent or guardian and the child.

GDPR Compliance Notice
In May 2018 European Union (EU) introduced the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which protects the rights of user with reference to their personal data. We support the protection of data rights for all users of our products and services and make every effort to comply with the GDPR regulations. The below notice outlines how we comply with the GDPR.
- When using any of our products or services, users may be asked to provide some information about themselves. We request only the bare minimum of information and particularly where children are likely to be users, we may not require any personal data at all.

Our legitimate interest for obtaining personal data such as name, email address and online identification such as IP addresses, are for three primary purposes:
- We obtain email addresses to secure a user’s account and the integrity of our websites, and to communicate with users to provide technical support or to communicate with users where they have consented to receive communication.
- We obtain names to provide an identity between students and educators to offer safety and facilitate the learning experience between these parties (where possible we advise students not to input their full name).
- We obtain IP address data to identify general geolocation of our users so that we may appropriately target our products, marketing and compliance efforts.
- We use third parties to assist us to manage and collate data, including Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity. The personal data of users is carefully managed between third parties, we only utilise reputable organisations to provide data services which are known to adequately uphold the rights of users.
- User data is held whilst the user holds an active account.
- A user may at any time contact us via the above contact details to request that their personal data is modified, erased or is restricted from further processing.
- If a user has provided consent for us to process their data, that user may withdraw that consent by contact us using the above contact details.
- Whilst we make every effort to protect your data rights, if you have any concerns we advise that you have the right to make a complaint directly to us or to your local supervisory authority.
