The grievance

Let's take another look at the first chunk, where Frankenstein's monster states his grievance.

We'll look for distinctive word choices or phrasing that we could adapt in our own variations:

“Accursed creator! Why did you form a monster so hideous that even you turned from me in disgust?

Intense describers: AccursedHideousDisgust!

The monster uses the most intense adjectives possible.

Type any adjectives you currently use into Thesaurus.com and see if you can find more intense alternatives.

Be selective! This isn't about stuffing random words everywhere; it's about making deliberate choices for effect.

Using a title instead of a name: Accursed creator!

Notice how the monster doesn't say, "Accursed Frankenstein!" Instead he identifies the doctor by a role, which elevates him into more of an abstract power.

If you named someone, can you refer to them by a title or role instead?

Word order in a noun group: A monster so hideous!

In everyday speech we'd say, "Why did you create such a hideous monster?" But Shelley flips the order so that the emphasis lands on her intense describer, 'hideous'.

Is there a noun at the heart of your complaint? Is there an adjective that describes it? Can you shift the adjective after the noun?

Intensifying: So hideous that even you...

The monster intensifies the complaint by saying, "even you, the one person who should love me, turns away".

Is there a way you can use this phrase to jab your finger at the person you're accusing?

Compression: That even you turned from me

In contemporary speech we might say, "turned away from"—but 'away' is redundant, and cutting it compresses the speech and increases intensity.

Are there any words you can cut? Any ways you can make your phrasing more compact?

Let's revise our worked examples.

Here's our original bedroom-cleaning variation, followed by a revision that uses a few of the highlighted voice ideas from the original:

"Muuuum! Why did you clean my room so now I can’t find my charger?

“Galling mother! Why did you make my room so clean that even you are now thwarted from finding my charger?

Sounds a little like Stewie from Family Guy—which is part of what makes that character funny, a toddler with an elevated voice.

Stewie Griffin Family Guy

Here's our alien-abduction example, first the structure draft, and then the voice draft:

"You stupid Redditors! Why did you spam my address into space so that now I’ve been abducted by Gammalorians?

“Witless Redditors! How could you spam my address so far into space that even you were astonished by my Gammalorian abduction?

Note that in the alien example we couldn't use all of the highlighted ideas, but we still managed to make it sound more like Frankenstein.

We'll insert your structure draft for you to revise.

Remember, the main goals are intensity and compression.

Revise your variation however you think will best achieve that. Use the highlighted ideas for inspiration.

Suggestions:

  • Choose strong describers.
  • Order your phrases to emphasise the strongest words.
  • Cut words to compress the meaning.
Revise your original variation to create a more gothic voice.
