Persuasion & argument types

In Teaching Argument Writing with Frankenstories, we talk about 7 types of argument:

  • Factual
  • Causal
  • Proposal
  • Valuational
  • Definitional
  • Resemblance
  • Ethical

Any of these argument types could be delivered through a more or less persuasive experience, depending on how the speaker uses character, emotion, and logical mode in combination.

In the Frankenstories prompt library, we have a few preset prompts that draw these two concepts together.

  • We have only created prompts for factual, causal, proposal, & valuational arguments, but you can easily modify them to include definitional, resemblance, & ethical arguments.
  • The prompts assume that the players know what these argument types are, what kinds of issues they apply to, and the types of reasoning they use.
  • The round instructions scaffold persuasive modes (usually in a character, emotion, logic sequence) instead of reasoning.
  • You can modify the prompt & scaffolding (including the number of rounds) to create whatever experience you want.

The purpose of these games is to help players practice persuasive modes within the constraint of a given type of issue & reasoning.
