What's an artifact?

Let's look at how we might describe specific artifacts.

An artifact is a historically interesting object that was made by people.

Artifacts can be of different sizes.

An artifact could be something you hold in your hands, like this mask of Tutankhamun:

It could be a whole building, like the Colosseum in Rome:

You could even stretch the definition to cover a site with multiple buildings, like the city of Machu Picchu in Peru:

What's important for our purposes is that an artifact is something specific, made by humans, that you could touch.
