When we talk about an artifact, we mean a specific, singular item or object that you can touch in the world.

But sometimes we want to be more general.

Rather than describe a specific artifact, we might want to describe the general art form or technology that the artifact belongs to.

For example, rather than describe the Great Pyramid of Giza, we might want to describe Egyptian pyramids in general.
