Focusing on behaviour

So far we've described historical arts & technologies in terms of what they were.

Now let's describe how they were applied and used.

For example, we described the way an average Roman road was made of four layers of material on top of a foundation.

  • But how did Roman workers build it? What tools did they use? How did they get material delivered? How long did it take?
  • And how did Romans use the road once it was built? Did they travel on foot, by horse, or by carriage? Where did they go?

These are all questions about historical technology, but they are about the process of building and using the road more than the road itself.
