Controlling timing

There are several ways you can control timing and pace in Frankenstories.

FS Timers

The global game settings let you control:

  • Time allowed for writing
  • Time allowed for voting
  • Number of rounds in the game

Each of these will have different effects on the length and pace of the game.

Notes

  • For most players, 80 seconds is a quick writing round.
  • 60 seconds is enough to squeeze out a sentence or two.
  • Long writing rounds might not serve much purpose if the character limit is short unless players are slow writers and/or happy to revise.
  • If you know players will write short replies, it can be worth shortening the voting timer to keep the game moving quickly.

As a game moderator, you can pause the round timer.

  • Note that it's only the timer that stops; players can actually continue to write or vote and submit.
  • If all the players submit replies or votes, then the current phase will end and the next phase will begin, which will start a new timer.

FS Pause button

This lets you use the pause button in a couple of ways:

  • You can pause the game indefinitely and come back tomorrow, next week, or whenever to continue.
  • You can pause the game to have a discussion with students before resuming.
  • You can pause the timer in order to allow students extra time to write or vote.

As a moderator, you can also advance the game to the next writing or voting phase by clicking the advance ⏭️ button.

This is handy if you want to move the game along for any reason.
