Here's a snippet that uses a place.

You might find yourself wondering is 'down' part of the 'action' or part of the 'place'? 

If we wanted to be technical, then we would say that 'down' is an adverb modifying the verb, but we're not talking strictly about word classes here, so it is perfectly valid to consider 'down' to be part of a distinct type of action 'to jump down'.
