This lesson helps students develop a definition and a feel for simple sentences in order to prepare them for learning about more complex sentences. The lesson focuses on identifying the real-world elements (people, things, actions, qualities, times, and places) within sentences, rather than technical detail. We define a simple sentence as being one that contains only a single action, and then we look at the wide variety of sentences that can fit under this definition. In this lesson students read and rewrite simple sentences from a wide variety of authors.
