Eyes, eyes, eyes

Is this a list? If so, what can you say about it?

Vertical, horizontal, or matrix? Ordered or unordered? How many levels? What are the list items? How much detail in each item?

Some of these questions are tricky!

  • It's definitely not a matrix because in a matrix there's one list item per row, and the other columns contain properties of that item. This layout is a grid, but it's not a matrix.
  • But would you say it's horizontal or vertical? It doesn't really matter; you could say it's either, or both. On balance, I read it left to right in rows, so I would say it's horizontal. Someone from a culture that reads vertical script might see it differently.
  • Unordered.
  • One level in the hierarchy.
  • List items are images of animal eyes.

The items are detailed because they are photographs that capture a lot of visual detail.

The visual presentation rapidly conveys a lot of information, though as a 'reader' we might only be notice some of the detail if we slow down and examine and compare items closely.
