Being deceptive

Let's try and be deceptive in our list.

I'm going to move to a different physical location and write a new list of things in front of me, but I'm going to lie about two of the items.

Can you tell which items are lies?

Box of brown guacamole left over from yesterday

Jar of peanut butter

Empty kombucha bottles with plants growing out of them

Cardboard box full of white and yellow papers

A post-it note with a computer password written in code

Which ones are lies? How sure are you?

The last two are lies.

Truth:

  • Box of brown guacamole left over from yesterday
  • Jar of peanut butter
  • Empty kombucha bottles with plants growing out of them

Lies:

  • Carboard box full of white and yellow papers
  • A post-it note with a computer password written in code

Could you tell? Were you certain?

If not, why are these lies more convincing than the fabrications in the previous example?

Write your own deceptive list of 5+ things in front of you, and include 2 lies. Try and make it so a reader couldn't tell.

Was it hard to come up with plausible deceptions? Why?
