Prompts for moment and scene-level skills

The Frankenstories skill prompts list

We've created a Google doc that turns 200+ individual Writelike activities into Frankenstories prompts

Why?

Writelike lessons provide explicit instruction, mentor-text modelling, and worked examples.

They work well for developing sentence/paragraph & moment/scene-level skills, but the process is repetitive and can become fatiguing.

One way to spice things up is to turn Writelike activities into Frankenstories prompts so that students can explore concepts or skills as a group.

  • Almost all the prompts link to a specific Writelike lesson page where you can find snippets, examples, and explanations.
  • Some include links to example games that show the prompt in action.
  • Some work as the entire game prompt while others work well when combined with a random prompt.
  • Take one feature of this character and then keep exaggerating it, taking it as far as you can go. [Context] [Example game]
  • Describe their most strongly held goal. Elaborate on it in detail—what do they want to achieve and why? What are the obstacles to achieving it? [Context] [Example game]
  • [Start with a random prompt then add +]. Use juxtaposition to contrast two time periods. [Context] [Example game]
  • [Start with a random prompt then add +]. Each round, include a prepositional phrase using: R1 In. R2 To. R3 On. R4 For. R5 As. [Example game]

This list is a work in progress.

If you want prompts for specific skills, text-types, genres, or themes—let us know!

And if you have any you want to share, send them our way!

Ideally, this would be a feature built into Frankenstories, but for now it's a copy-and-paste process.

  1. Go to the Google Doc and use the Document Outline to find a skill you want to target.
  2. Choose a prompt.
  3. Copy it from the Google Doc (leaving off any square bracket comments).
  4. Create a Frankenstories game.
  5. If you're going to use a Frankenstories image, refresh the image until you find one that suits your prompt.
  6. Click Custom.
  7. Paste the skill-prompt text and tweak it however you like.
  8. Assign the game to the relevant groups and off you go!
