Exceptions

The final type of meaning we'll look at is exceptions to things.

But there was nothing on the back of the door, except the screws and nuts that held the knocker on.

But there was nothing on the back of the door, except a mysterious purple stain.

We could also use a multi-word preposition:

But there was nothing on the back of the door, with the exception of two bags of rotting turnips.
