A few tips about highlighters

So far, you've seen snippets with highlighting applied, like this.

(Notice that the highlighters aren't necessarily applied in the same order they are listed, and that sometimes only parts of a snippet are highlighted.)

Usually, you will see snippets in an unhighlighted state, like this.

Click the Show Our Highlighting button below.

Then click it again to return to your unhighlighted version.

Most of the time all you will want to do is read the snippet with and without highlighting.

But if you want to experiment with your own highlighting, you can do it by selecting a highlighter and dragging across the text.

Highlight this line pink, not green.

Then click Show Our Highlighting.

And click back to show your highlighting.

Now try erasing your pink highlight by clicking it.

Here is one annoying thing about highlighters.

Highlight this paragraph and the one below...

... at the same time.

You might notice that you can't highlight across paragraph breaks; you have to highlight each paragraph separately. (If you play around, you'll find you can highlight dragging up but not dragging down, but your highlighting won't stay if you toggle the Show button.)

It's annoying, but that's the way it is for now. 😔

You'll rarely need to do this, but keep it in mind.

Dragging highlighters can be annoying if you don't have a mouse or you're on a mobile device. Here's an alternative approach:

1. Select a highlighter.

2. Double-click the first word of the span you want to highlight.

3. Double-click the last word in the span.

This approach might not be as easy to read, but it's just as effective for reflecting on your writing, which is the important thing. And it's a lot less fiddly.

Finally, big picture:

Highlighting is a way to help you see elements or patterns in the snippet.

It's not an 'activity'. There are no grades for doing it. It's just scaffolding.

Also, there are situations in which the highlighting is debatable—so don't be surprised if sometimes you disagree with it.
