The place and the intrusion

You need two things to begin writing your variation:

  • a place, and
  • an intrusion.

The place

This is can be anywhere, but it should be big enough that you can describe it in terms of locations, things, and people. For example:

  • School
  • Home
  • Neighbourhood
  • City
  • Country town
  • Stadium
  • River
  • Island
  • Forest
  • Mountain

The intrusion

The intrusion has to be environmental and pervasive, affecting everything. For example, it can't be a cat, but it could be a plague of cats. Ideas could include:

  • Heat
  • Wind
  • Snow
  • Cold
  • Mist
  • Damp
  • Silence
  • Noise
  • Sunshine
  • Pollen
  • Fire
  • Water
  • Insects
  • Animals

The intrusion could also be something psychological that's affecting the whole environment:

  • Nerves
  • Contentment
  • Anxiety
  • Resentment
  • Joy
  • Anger

Here are the ideas we're going to develop for our worked examples in this lesson:

Brainstorm some place and intrusion combos.

You'll need to choose one combo to write about in this lesson.

From your list, which place seems the most interesting and which intrusion would be the most fun to write about?

Once you have your ideas, we're ready to start writing!
