Qualify and quantify

We looked at the last snippet in terms of its three-part structure, but let’s look at one other subtle trick it uses to create gothic intensity.

Above all was the sense of hearing acute. I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many things in hell.

Notice how these qualifying and quantifying words and phrases heighten the intensity.

Imagine the snippet without them:

The sense of hearing was acute. I heard things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard things in hell.

They are tiny, but those extra words make a big difference.

Let’s try the last few examples again, but this time making sure to add some qualifying and quantifying words. We’ll have to tweak the rest of the text to make this work.

More than any other house on the block, mine was the biggest. It had many swimming pools and tennis courts. It had a lovely ice-skating rink.

Certainly my brothers were foolish. One of them was full of greed and the other was full of anger. Neither had much brains.

Most of all the customers were sophisticated. They bought all the clothing from the past and all of the furniture from the future. They bought nothing from the present.
