How Ghostopolis shows a horse evading two velociraptors

When Garth’s horse outmanoeuvres two velociraptors in the wilderness outside Ghostopolis, the author uses the horse’s position and direction in panel to help us follow the course of action. In panel 1, the horse is positioned at the left edge of panel, running away so fast that its head is just out of panel. In panel 2, the horse makes a sudden reversal, the effect of which is exaggerated by the horse’s head suddenly being so prominent in the center-left. In panel 3, the horse pulls up at the edge of a cliff, rearing back from the center of the panel. Finally, in panel 4, the horse is still in center panel, but now the scene is tilted forwards, reinforcing the sense of fighting against momentum (as the raptors are propelled over the cliff). When combined, these panels show the horse’s position in panel progressing systematically from left to right—even though there is a complete reversal of the horse’s direction—and this simple progression helps us follow a potentially confusing action sequence. Similar care is given to the position and direction of the velociraptors in the scene.
