If you create contrast in a story, you lay the foundations for conflict.
Here is a simple and stark example, in one of the most famous lines in English literature:
"Four legs good, two legs bad."
Conflict doesn't get much more stark than that.
Notice that the kernel of the conflict is the juxtaposition of four legs vs two legs.
The addition of "good vs bad" just amplifies it by assigning values to each side.
What are some other ways of creating conflict in one line?
"In man vs fish, man is the reigning champion."
"The fact is, I’m hot and you’re average at best."
You've been building a world throughout this lesson. Do you feel like there's an essential conflict at the heart of it?
Say it in a line.
It's one thing to have a conflict in principle.
What happens when the opposing forces collide?
