Remember:

  • Character is mostly about establishing trust.
  • If the audience trusts the speaker, they are more likely to reflect the speaker's feelings and agree with their arguments.
  • There are several ways in which character can be persuasive, including:
    • Demonstrating expertise & authority
    • Showing the audience you're just like them or not like someone else
    • Being honest about weaknesses
    • Demonstrating virtue
  • Character is best demonstrated over time, but a skilled influencer can establish character more quickly.
  • Character can also backfire and count against the speaker in a variety of ways.

Persuasion is everywhere. Grab anything you find persuasive and study how the speaker establishes their character.
