Introduction

We're going to do impressions of some distinctive writing styles, including fairy tales, TV guides and songs. To give us something to write about, we'll use this painting as inspiration.

Collins St, 5p.m. was painted by Australian artist John Brack in 1955. It shows a busy Melbourne street at the end of the working day. While the faces are all different, the dull colours and repetition give it a feeling of drudgery.

It’s owned by the National Gallery of Victoria.
While it’s been voted the most popular painting in the gallery, the artist has since called it “totally unsatisfactory”, because he felt he was mocking the people in the street by making them seem dull.

We'll do five exercises. For each exercise, you'll get a snippet in a particular style, and then an example showing how you could apply that style to the image.
