Here is another variation on contrasting clauses.

My life was over; my life had just begun.

Again this snippet uses the semicolon to pair two sides of the same coin. 

It was dark; it was light.

It was the best of times; it was a living nightmare.

I wanted to laugh; I wanted to cry.
