How random prompts work

Frankenstories writing prompts can seem a little baffling at first, so let’s talk about how they work.

Image + text

  • Base prompts consist of one image and one string of text.
  • You can add additional text instructions to each round for extra scaffolding.

Random prompts

  • Frankenstories has a big collection of images and text prompts.
  • Random prompts pair a random image with a random text prompt.
  • Most combinations make sense; occasionally some don't.
  • Prompts that don't make complete sense can still produce great stories if the players are creative & flexible.
  • Most of our random text prompts consist of a keyword or phrase.
  • They're vague so they work with almost any image—it's up to players to figure out how to use them!
  • They are genre-agnostic. You can choose text prompt "themes" (character, relationship, situation) but the difference has more to do with suitable image composition than with genre.
  • If a random combination is too weird or inappropriate for your class, simply re-roll or edit it.
  • You can customise the text prompt or create your own.
  • Images are themed so you can select a genre or style.
  • Our random images represent characters, relationships, or situations.
  • The random image selection avoids characterless landscapes or real people.
  • You can upload your own images if you have a Frankenstories Pro subscription.

The frenetic, improvisational nature of Frankenstories means stories and arguments are often bizarre or ridiculous.

This creates a challenge with regard to representation in the random image pool:

  • It's good to have broad representation.
  • But the best prompt images usually feature people in weird situations.
  • We don't want to facilitate stories that belittle or abuse members of a minority or marginalised population.
  • But we also don't want to deprive members of those communities of the opportunity to write wacky, ludicrous stories about themselves.

We don't currently have a good answer for this, so:

  • We're generally more selective when choosing images featuring members of vulnerable populations.
  • And we encourage you to use custom images to reflect your students.
  • If you want a particular type of imagery, let us know.

You might need to actively teach students how to interpret and extrapolate from these types of prompts.

A good way to do that is to read and discuss games in the Frankenstories Hall of Fame.

We suggest you play with random prompts for the first few games.

Not all prompt combinations are great; feel free to refresh. But be aware that sometimes the dumbest prompts lead to the best games!
